Description

It is a fast growing deciduous or semi-evergreen tree which can grow to 40m tall, with an upright, symmetrical crown and horizontal branches. The bole can be straight or twisted and set with short woody spines.

LEAVES: Leaves are large, long, broad, ovoid-shaped, glossy dark green in colour which then turns red and fall off, and leathery.

FLOWERS: Flowers are white to greenish, inconspicuous and with no petals, produced on axillary spikes. Trees are monoecious, with male and female flowers on same tree.

FRUIT: Edible fruit is a drupe, fibrous with a tender skin, long and broad, green and yellow when unripe, then turns red when ripe, it contains a single seed.

Uses

1. The tree provides a red, good-quality, elastic timber that seasons well and works easily.

2. It is strong and pliable and is used for the construction of buildings, boats, bridges, floors, boxes, crates, planks, carts.

3.The trunk is a source of gum and also a source of yellow and black dye.

4. it is used in leather preparation and as a base for inks; sometimes the roots and fruits are used for the same purposes.
