Description

It is a fast growing almost evergreen legume tree that can be 10-30m in height and it shallow rooted with a relatively short bole. The trunk may reach 2m in height and it can be buttressed towards the base. The crown is umbrella shaped broadly spreading its long horizontal branches. It is noted for its fern-like leaves and flamboyant display of orange-red flowers over summer.

BARK: The bark is smooth, sometimes slightly cracked, with lenticels. The tree shed its leaves in areas with marked dry season.

LEAVES: The leaves are bipinnate, alternate, feathery, 20-60cm long bearing 10-25 pairs of pinnae, each with 30-60 opposite leaflets.

FLOWERS: The inflorescence bears large magnificent flowers, orange -red in color, loosely arranged on 5-7.5cm long stalks.

Uses

1. It is an ornamental tree planted in parks and avenues for its magnificent flowering and as a shade tree.

2. Its leaves provide forage for livestock and the seed meal can be fed to farm animals.

3. The flowers are a good source of feed for bees.

4.The wood can be used as firewood and the timber can be used for light construction or fence posts.
