It is a buttressed small to medium tree species that grows up to 25-37 m in height with a mature girth varying from 1.5 to 2 m.
BARK: It has a thin bark that is pale brownish-green, and when slashed exudes white, gummy latex.
LEAVES: Its leaves are simple, dark green above, pale tawny below when young and silver-white below when mature. Leaf lamina are oblong elliptic to oblanceolate elliptic.
FRUITS: Fruits are almost spherical and are slightly pointed at the tip, they are greenish-grey when immature and turns orange-red, yellow-brown or yellow, sometimes with speckles, 5 celled, with 5 brown seeds in yellowish, pleasantly acid pulp.
FLOWERS: Flowers are fascicled in current leaf axils. Sepals are broadly ovate to suborbicular, both pedicel and calyx are with brown pubescence.
The generic name is based on Greek words for ‘gold’ and ‘leaf’ and refers to the leaves of some species that are often covered with golden hairs underneath
1. It has an edible fruit.
2.Its wood is easy to saw and plane, nails well, takes a fine polish, and therefore is suitable for construction work, tool handles and similar purposes.
3.Its fruits can also be fermented and distilled for the production of wine and spirits.
