It is a deciduous or evergreen tree with conspicuously layered branches growing 10-20m tall. It has an erect bole with a smooth bark mottled pale grey with protruding brownish lenticels.
LEAVES: The leaves are slightly glossy green, spathulate and uneven to crenate margins.
FLOWERS: It has small flowers which are greenish in color and erect spikes up to 5cm long.
FRUITS: Fruits are small and oval with seeds about 1.5cm long with no obvious wings.
BARK: It is pale grey, smooth and rather mottled.
Its high oil content, high tensile strength and tight grain makes it suitable where weather resistance is desired. It is resistant to termite attacks and damage caused by other insects.
Uses
1. It is grown as ornamental and to provide shade.
2. It is locally used as a medicine and by traditional healers to control diverse infections or associated symptoms.
3. The bark and the wood are astringent and used in the treatment of dysentery.
4. It is also used as a source of dyes and tannins.
